World Architecture Day

World Architecture Day is celebrated around the globe on the first Monday of October – and at DAC, an ordinary Monday has turned into a festive day with more than 3,000 guests.

The Danish Architecture Center opens its doors and offers free admission. That’s how it always is on the first Monday in October. The occasion is World Architecture Day – a worldwide celebration of how architecture shapes our lives, from the homes we live in to the public spaces we move through.

A day for the curious

On World Architecture Day, you can experience more than the usual. At DAC, the program always includes inspiring talks, extended guided tours, city walks, and creative family activities where both kids and adults can explore architecture in practice. You can come alone, bring your family, or invite your colleagues – the day is open to everyone.

Why do we celebrate architecture?

World Architecture Day was established by the international association of architects, UIA (Union Internationale des Architectes), in the mid-1980s. The idea was clear: Architecture concerns everyone, and therefore there should be an annual occasion when the field opens itself to the public. Today, the day is a well-established tradition in many countries, including Denmark.

Here in Denmark, the Danish Association of Architects coordinates the event nationally. The association brings together a broad program across municipalities, architecture firms, libraries, schools and cultural institutions. The content varies from place to place, but the common theme is openness, debate, and public engagement.

More than drawings and words

World Architecture Day makes it easy to experience architecture up close. It’s not just about models and plans, but about the real environments we use every day: housing, public spaces, nature, and landscapes. The day gives children and young people the chance to try their hand at shaping spaces themselves and creates meeting points where citizens, professionals, and authorities can discuss ongoing projects. In this way, the day strengthens our shared understanding of all that architecture is.
