Urbanplanen – Social Housing
The social housing complex in Copenhagen’s West Amager district, Urbanplanen, is home to nearly 6,000 people and has undergone a positive transformation in recent years.

Urbanplanen has undergone a tremendous transformation since its early days as an infamous social housing complex. Back in the 1990s, this part of Amager, on the fringes of Copenhagen, was characterized by dismal concrete housing blocks and social problems, and definitely had a bad reputation.
Built in the late 60s and early 70s, Urbanplanen was named after the urban planning movement called urbanization.
Better Social Housing and Architectural Awards
Like many other new urban areas at the time, Urbanplanen had a closed design that seemed to turn its back on the rest of Copenhagen. It was the trend of the day and it worked for a while, but today that trend has garnered a great deal of criticism. And so in recent years, these areas have been renovated and opened up in an effort to address some of their social problems through better social housing.
In 2020, a new park was built in the community, Remiseparken, which has won several architectural awards. Today, Remiseparken brings the community together and provides a range of activities.
