Traffic Tower East
Inside Traffic Tower East is the brain of the Danish railway system. The control tower monitors more than 45,000 daily train departures, and its architecture provides the framework for the high-tech system.

If you’ve ever taken a train to or from Copenhagen Central Station, you may have noticed it. The cylindrical building clad in brown bricks stands out in the midst of the busy hub at Dybbølsbro Station. However, Traffic Tower East is so much more than an architectural landmark. It is also the digital brain of Denmark’s railway system. From here, more than 45,000 daily train departures are monitored using advanced digital technology, ensuring that thousands of people get to work, to school and to countless other destinations every single day.
Architecture for Movement
Designed by the architects at Tranberg Arkitekter, Traffic Tower East was completed in 2015. The tower houses three control centers that monitor both local trains and S-trains, as well as traffic on freeways, highways and bridges for the Danish Road Directorate.
The 42-meter-high cylindrical tower is a reflection of the building’s functions, which focus on movement, timing and rotation. Inside, the floor in the foyer is beautifully adorned with hand-cut red and white tiles laid in a dizzying geometric pattern. And both indoors and out, there are Africa-inspired works by artist Henrik Plenge Jakobsen.
