Skabelonloftet

Skabelonloftet unites the iconic industrial heritage of the B&W shipyard with a contemporary creative community. It was once Denmark’s largest workplace and it still stores the original drawings and templates from the shipyard.

At the top of the old Burmeister & Wain shipyard sits a loft that very few know about. The Drafting Loft is situated at the very top of the iconic industrial building on Refshaleøen, which was once Denmark’s largest workplace. Today, the space has been transformed into workshops and offices for creatives.

Home of the First Diesel-Powered Ship

B&W was founded in 1843, and during its heyday employed more than 10,000 workers. The shipyard on Refshaleøen was built in 1872. Previously, the rapidly growing shipbuilder had been located in Christianshavn, but eventually grew out of those spaces.

In 1912, B&W was world-renowned for building the Selandia, the world’s first diesel-powered ship that could sail the world’s oceans. The company’s success continued through much of the 20th century, but global competition gradually impacted B&W. After countless bankruptcies, the shipyard finally shut down permanently in 1996.

Original Drawings and Templates

Skabelonloftet covers a 1400-square-meter drafting loft with raw steel beams and classic factory windows. It's still characterized by its industrial heritage, including examples of the original metal production and drawings for ship production which decorate doors and tables.
