Architects design houses. People create homes. With Welcome Home, Danish Architecture Center put the future of Danish housing on the agenda. DAC raised the question of why we live as we do and invited you to explore and participate in the discussion on how we will live in the future. What are our dreams? How will the reality be like? And what are good homes, good neighborhoods and good cities?

Welcome Home was a journey through Danish homes. The exhibition showed the major historical events that have shaped the way we live – from industrialization and world wars to megacities and threatening climate crises. It examined how current challenges, such as changing demographics and evolving family ties, affect our homes today. Finally, a range of artistic and technological proposals invited you to discover how we will all live and build in the future.

"The home of the future has already been built. In 30 years, most Danes will live in houses that already exist. The question therefore becomes: How can we upgrade our current homes to meet our future expectations of sustainability, evolving family ties and changing dreams? That and much more, we would like to explore with our Danish and international visitors."

  • Multiple shadow house was a light installation by the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson.

    The interactive installation was the size of a house. But as part of the Welcome Home exhibition, the art work showed how a house and a home is not the same. The home is something else and more than the physical architecture – most importantly, it includes people. Olafur Eliasson’s art work touched the senses and creates a bodily experience of how people in motion create relations in space.
