Copenhagen Architecture Biennial

In 2025, Copenhagen will host its first architecture biennial. Copenhagen Architecture Biennial debuts under the theme Slow Down – a call to rethink the fast pace of modern life and its impact on our built environment.

Location

Bryghuspladsen 10 1473 København K Danmark

In an era of rapid population growth, rising energy use, and heavy resource consumption, the biennial highlights how architecture can help foster a slower rhythm. It’s about imagining spaces that promote sustainability, durability, and a closer connection with nature and our surroundings.

The biennial features more than 250 events across Copenhagen. Highlights include Danish names like Adept with Fast City/Slow Architecture and Lendager’s Living Lab, as well as international figures such as Atelier Bow-Wow, Rem Koolhaas, sonic architecture works by Ying-Hsueh Chen, and a talk with Japanese philosopher Kohei Saito. Open House Copenhagen will also take place, giving the public access to buildings normally closed to visitors.

Centered Around DAC

Located in the heart of Copenhagen’s Cultural District, the Danish Architecture Center is a key venue for experiencing the biennial.

Join MorgenDAC

On World Architecture Day, October 6 at 16:00, DAC hosts a special afternoon edition of MorgenDAC (in Danish), asking the question: Is it our broken relationship with nature that makes us so bad at protecting it?

Explore the Pavilions Nearby

On Bryghuspladsen, right outside DAC’s main entrance, you’ll find Little Eelgrass Pavilion—an installation and participatory experience inviting visitors to engage with eelgrass, one of nature’s quiet yet powerful climate allies.

At Søren Kierkegaards Plads, between BLOX and The Black Diamond, you can experience Inside Out, Downside Up. Set in a context between historic brick warehouses and modern glass-and-steel buildings, the pavilion is built primarily from recycled materials and offers a sensory, tactile take on the biennial’s Slow Down theme.

Discover BLOX From the Inside

On the weekend of September 20–21, visitors can explore hidden parts of BLOX. See inside one of the apartments at the top of the building and enjoy the view, or join a guided tour through the rest of BLOX, home to DAC. Advance registration is required.

Breaking Barriers: Assemble!

DAC will host the opening day of the Assemble! conference. The theme is Breaking barriers through law, featuring radical ideas, sharp debates, and new perspectives.

Three keynote talks include:

Indy Johar, architect and co-founder of Dark Matter Labs, on imagining a global building pause and opening new urban futures.

Kate Orff, landscape architect, founder of SCAPE, and director of the Urban Design Program at Columbia University, on legal strategies for climate adaptation and resilient landscapes.

Anders Lendager, architect and founder of Lendager, on rethinking ownership models as a driver of circular architecture.

The talks will be followed by panel debates with key stakeholders across the building industry – from developers and engineers to contractors, economists, and legal experts. The program also features best-practice presentations showing how future-oriented ideas are already being put into action.
